When Prints on Glass Are a Better Idea than Canvas

When it comes to a DIY interior design project, we’re all guilty of some lazy ideas, whether in our choice of wall art or other design aspects. Sometimes it’s because we’re limited by the physical aspects of a space – all awkward furniture layouts can be laid at the feet of that particular challenge. Sometimes this is because we’re not aware of alternatives, like when we default to canvas prints for our wall art because we’re not aware that we can get stunning prints on glass instead.

That doesn’t mean that prints on glass are naturally superior to canvas or other wall art alternatives. Different materials lend themselves to different rooms, different design plans, and different purposes. So how to choose the material for your wall art? Here’s a handy guide to those times when glass may be a better choice.

Light and Prints on Glass

Canvas is an absorptive material that takes light and sound and muffles it subtly. This can give a room a comfortable, warm feel, but it can also work against you when the room in question gets lots of natural light. If sunlight is pouring in from big windows, canvas on the walls can seem dim, and thus make the room as a whole seem dim as well.

Prints on glass, on the other hand, take that light and beam it right back into the room, transformed by colour, resulting in a room that seems brighter and livelier. That makes glass the ideal material for your wall art when the room in question is a bright, sunny space.

Damp Conditions

Canvas is an absolutely terrible choice for any room that sees a lot of humidity. This would include the bathroom and kitchen areas, certainly – but also a laundry room, a dank basement area (even if finished) or a porch or even a sun room, where plants and sunlight can combine into a jungle-like atmosphere.

If you’re designing a look for any space that gets a lot of damp, your canvas will suffer very quickly. Prints on glass, on the other hand, are perfect for damp conditions and will take no harm from moderate humidity or even the occasional direct contact with water, as long as they’re dried immediately and cared for properly otherwise.

Windowless Rooms

Sometimes homes come with a special feature: the odd room without any sort of window. Often these are the result of renovations that put up interior walls to create a new bedroom for a growing family, or they’re just “bonus” spaces that result from creative floor plans. Whatever their source, prints on glass are often the ideal wall art in these spaces because the glass material will reflect any available light, brightening the space and sometimes giving the illusion of a window despite a total lack of one.

If the room in question happens to have a skylight instead of a window (typical of modern bathrooms) even better: the glass on the walls will reflect that light around the room.
