Things No One Thinks about When They Order Canvas Prints

Whether you’re just a homeowner trying your hand at interior design for the first time or an experienced professional looking at your umpteenth family room and wondering how you’re going to make it soar, we all think of using canvas prints at one point or another as if we’re the first to think of it. Once you think about it, it’s an obvious and powerful tool, after all – whether using personal photos or amazing stock photos like ours these products bring colour, texture, dimension, and imagery into a room all at once and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They’re ideal interior design material.

Even the professionals, though, often forget a few basic aspects of using canvas as wall art, because these products have a lot of hidden aspects to them. If you want to get it absolutely right the first time out, here are the things no one ever thinks about.

Mind the Wrap

When you order canvas prints you’re usually asked to specify a wrap – and many folks either don’t really know what that means or don’t think through the implications. If you’re going to have a “gallery wrap“, then the image will be stretched over the sides of the canvas. That means you have to consider two things:

• You have to leave room around the edges of the picture to act as the wrap to ensure that the main focus of your image isn’t pulled off to the sides – and that the compositional integrity of the image isn’t ruined.
• Since the edges of the picture will also be part of the image, you need to consider what those edges will look like. Gallery wraps that aren’t carefully considered can look garish and distracting.

Canvas Prints Scale

Size matters. This may not be surprising or new information for you – but what sizes matter is often new information to people. Certainly, the size of your pictures matter, as does the size of the room itself. Most amateurs get that far on their own, but there are other matters of scale that should affect your choice of art on the walls:

1. Furniture. If your furniture is monumental in scale, your prints will have to be monumental as well in order to compete. Alternatively you can go for an installation of many smaller pieces – as long as you have considered the furniture.
2. Ceilings. How high are your ceilings? Many people forget to think about vertical space when choosing prints for their walls.

It’s complicated, obviously. While you can always get an impact from your art in a room, you really do have to think about many, many details in order to really hit the nail on the head first time out.
